Barbara,
I just wanted you to know that we are praying for Michael as well. Also, my friend's husband had H1N1 that turned into pneumonia too. He is home now and recovering. If you would like, I can ask her for advice too.

My father was intubated through a tracheostomy. The surgeon assured me that it was much less painful than being intubated down his throat (and it clearly was...my father was much more comfortable) and that when my father was breathing on his own, it would be easy to remove and the incision would close up and heal. The three primary disadvantages were that my father couldn't eat or drink, he couldn't speak, and he was confused and tried to pull it out. We had to restrain his hands when we were out of the room.
